About This Video
A ride-along in the 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser with detailed discussion of the Cummins R2.8 diesel engine swap and H55F transmission. The engine is about a year old. They get 25 miles per gallon but it is loud. Deep technical content for the vehicle enthusiast segment of the audience, bridging Van's workshop philosophy with the mechanical specifics that keep a decades-old truck on the road every day.

foreign Cummins R 2.8 dual diaphragm Land Cruiser 80s series brake booster with separate Master cylinders for the front brakes and rear brakes this was the most significant noticeable hop-up it totally makes the
brakes more than twice as good brand new radiator brand new intercooling system this is an electric fan that only turns
on when the engine is warm enough so it doesn't it's more efficient than a belt driven fan got to keep my old air box
brand new battery diesel stuff this is a water separator it's like a fuel filter the engine is
much smaller there's much more room to get your hands in there um than the old engine that's the
starter new five-speed transmission [Music] to see that red thing and then that shim that goes I think to the
to the transmission all right let's start it new upholstery new Upholstery and new guts in this chair um these I got at Home Depot for 16 each
floor mats is complicated so stick diesel so you got to turn it on and wait this is called a pyrometer it tells me how hot the uh the exhaust coming out of the manifold
is if it goes past 12 thousand two hundred there's a red line right here and that means it's hot
enough to melt aluminum which is what the turbo is made out of so you have to be careful not to ride in that temperature range too long or you'll
melt the turbo this is a um it doesn't blink in real life it's just the frame rate this is a
GPS I ordered for 26 dollars a GPS speedometer because I can't read the the um miles per hour because they're in Orange
and they're dark and so this is uh in miles per hour and it takes a while to connect to the satellite you see how it's
when it's going to turn off again but here I'll start the engine that's what it sounds like when you start it from inside
and so this thing connects to a satellite and then it works and the reason I got it is because it's so much cheaper than
you know getting a new speedometer plus this speedometer is for the 31 inch stock tires and this has 33
inch stock tires so they're you'd have to recalibrate it which means taking it apart and putting in this little box so I didn't do it
um oh that's called a Murphy gauge and that holds it also doesn't blink that's the frames and you can toggle through all
the different engine settings like RPM or engine temperature or number of hours
okay so the speedometer is working I have to put this GoPro in my mouth in order to do a first person point of view
hear that okay so here we go now you guys are speed test
[Applause] I'll turn on the lights on the Tacoma there they are it's like having a completely new car everything's tighter
the brakes are unbelievable it's noisier on the passenger side because the
exhaust for this engine is routed under the passenger side and the exhaust for the old engine was routed underneath the driver's side but
I intend to get uh dynamating and dampening the sound inside the hood so it'll it should reduce the noise tremendously according
to what the forums say and the forums were extremely right about the brakes and so I'm just driving in my
neighborhood the entire ride back from Montana which was impossible before even if the big mountain passes and stuff because it has a lot of torque which from my uh
from the video about dropping it off you know the thing would only go like 35 and overheat the engine
so here's the hot pyrometer if it goes in 12 000 it melts the turbo but you have to be in 12 000 for probably a
couple minutes but look as you can see pretty good decent RPMs and it's only
halfway mark the third three quarters mark two thirds mark
