Two criteria for a pocket camera: it shoots 4K and it's easy to use. The iPhone fails on ease. Face Recognition almost never works, the quick-open shortcut is forgettable. The Insta360 is impressive but Van is too impatient to figure out the software. His GoPro Hero 8 Black, gifted by Casey, has been his favorite for years. He painted the Arriflex logo on it because the Arriflex was Kubrick's favorite camera.
One complaint: the Hero 8 takes about 4 seconds from off to shooting. His Canon SD870 from 2008 (640 resolution, obsolete) does it in under 2 seconds. Then Casey's GoPro 10 arrives in an enormous box with an RC boat meant to demonstrate horizon lock. The boat capsizes immediately. Van fishes the camera out of the lake. The video is a love letter to tools that just work, and an honest catalog of the ones that don't.

I am going to talk about the GoPro 10 in this one but first you should know what it is I look for in a
camera these are some of the cameras I've acquired over the past 16 years
I've thrown away the ones that require tapes I have two main types in my Arsenal big ones which I call Studio
cameras and little ones which I call sidearms or pocket cameras the GoPro is a pocket camera
we'll talk about the studio cameras some other time what do I look for in a pocket
camera it's got to be able to shoot in whatever the current ubiquitous format is and right now that's
4K goodbye goto goodbye Olympus Stylus from 2008 goodbye Canon tx1 but man look
how beautiful she is the Canon sd870 shoots only in 640
resolution but we're going to hold on to this one for just a second the second Criterion and sometimes this trumps the
4K requirement is that it's easy to use how careless can I be with it the worst
example of easy to use is the iPhone what a nightmare got to open the phone
face recognition almost never works there's a way to quickly open the camera but I don't remember
[Music] it sweet camera's open now just got to set it to video then 4K then 24 frames per second and the iPhone camera is is for emergencies only it's a backup I'm not smart enough for the
insta 360 yeah it's incredible but I'm too impatient to figure out how to download and use the footage and that's

to me by my YouTuber brother why did I paint the arlex logo on it because this
arlex was Kubrick's favorite camera and this GoPro is my current
favorite but I do have one minor complaint about her about the hero 8
black and it's well let me just show you why my last favorite pocket camera was
my favorite pocket camera for 14 years now watch how fast the Canon
sd870 goes from off to shooting power [Music] shooting power [Music] shooting okay now the GoPro 8 the shooting button turns it on so here it goes
power recording about 4 seconds okay sure it's less than 2 seconds slower but it's also nearly
twice as long for what you get of course it's worth it maybe it's my favorite camera of all
time what you're on your motorcycle do you want a better bag for that I was thinking it'd be funnier to just try to do it in this so I get the call from my
brother GoPro sent him a 10 Casey said I could borrow it but the way he said borrow was
vague thank you very much Casey thank you very much GoPro but
uh what's with the big box [Music] [Music] what's in the box is it explosive can I get it wet yes and yes

Casey nistad the idea is to mount the GoPro 10 to the RC boat and zip it around the lake while
recording supposed to demonstrate the 10's image stabilizer and Horizon
lock okay you ready okay the boat was a little faster than we expected

[Music] and this this is why I must insist that my camera be easy to use now I'm managing a toy boat a swan booat a kid and
[Music] water look at this footage the boat is violently slapping through the water but the camera looks like it's on Rails again the stabilization and Horizon lock are
