About This Video
Customizing Van's favorite camera, the Leica Q2, a camera made for idiot artists and not technicians. The problem: the LCD screen stays on and drains the battery. The viewfinder has a sensor that turns off the LCD, so Van builds an eye shade from a binder clip, a chunk of walnut firewood chiseled and milled down, some #2 sheet metal screws, a piece of leather, and VHB double-sided tape. This is an indulgence. Every customization is a correction, and the accumulation of corrections tells the story of a practice.

My favorite camera is this Leica Q2. I love the way that it's made for idiot
artists and not technicians. Today I'm going to make an eye shade for it. So I don't turn this Leica off. The LCD
screen is on and the LCD screen drains the battery. But to turn the LCD screen
off without turning the camera off, you can look through the viewfinder. And the viewfinder has a sensor on it. And the
viewfinder, if the sensor is tripped, will turn off the LCD screen, thus saving me battery life. And so this is
the solution I came up with. Binder clip, piece of firewood, walnut firewood that
I've sort of chiseled a chunk out of and then mil down. some number two sheet metal screws, flathead, which will lock
the eye screen up, and a little piece of leather. VHB, very high bond
double-sided tape to hold it to the camera. And this is an indulgence, something that I I just love doing stuff like this.
